Your invoice needs to show exactly what you did and where. Include the property address, the scope of work like tear-off and replacement or just repairs, the square footage you covered, and the materials you used with quantities. Clients will ask about permit numbers if you pulled them. Insurance companies especially want every detail documented. Break out labor and materials separately because some clients need that for their records or insurance claims.

Most roofers take a deposit upfront, usually 25-50% depending on the job size. For bigger projects you might split it into thirds: one at signing, one when materials arrive, and the final when you finish. Residential clients typically pay the balance on completion. Commercial jobs often run on net 30 terms. Do not start work without that deposit cleared.

Take photos before, during, and after every job and attach them to your final invoice. This kills most payment disputes before they start. When a client sees documentation of the rotted decking you replaced or the proper flashing details, they understand what they paid for. It also protects you if they claim damage later.
